MDA exploring options to add anti-air warfare capability to Aegis Ashore

The Missile Defense Agency is moving ahead with assessments that could give the land-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system the means to intercept cruise missiles and aircraft, a new capability Congress mandated be included as part of the next round of improvements to Aegis Ashore systems in Europe. The project aims to give the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System a range of capability comparable to the most current at-sea Aegis variants, which can simultaneously fight incoming ballistic missiles and lower-flying air threats.
