The Government Accountability Office is urging pipelinensafety regulators to gather more data and provide more guidancenon how to safely reduce the frequency of gas pipeline assessmentsnin the wake of several high-profile accidents over the pastnfew years.nThe 2002 pipeline safety law required gas pipeline operatorsnto assess the integrity of pipe segments in highly populated areasnevery seven years. There are about 20,000 miles of gas pipelinesnin these so-called high-consequence areas.
