Lead-free paint and gasoline don't do the whole job of protecting us from this dangerous element. Lead is being expelled from solder, glass and potter glaze as well. High technology devices have made abundant use of lead too. Mobile phones, watches and other electronic devices rely on lead zirconium titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramics, which are more than 60% lead by weight. Simultaneously, labs have been rapidly developing a new type of RAM (random access memory), FeRAM, which relies on electrical polarization, or ferroelectricity to work. Two volatile chemicals, bismuth and the environmentally damaging lead, is used to produce FeRAM.
