摘要

Food debris in the mouth when accumulated can produce acid, which can deteriorate the tooth surface and cause demineralization and destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth. Such dental caries progress as demineralization exceeds saliva, breaking down hard tissues to produce cavities or holes in the teeth. This situation can worsen resulting in death of pulp tissue and infection. In rare cases it can also lead to cavernous sinus thrombosis and Ludwig angina. A diet rich in sugary food and carbohydrates increases the amount of bacterial plaque and with it the chance of dental caries. Apart from diet and other disease states, personal oral hygiene such as daily flossing and brushing in the morning and before going to bed, can significantly reduce disease agents in the mouth and with it the incidence of caries.
