Diabetes affects the body's ability to produce or use insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels. Insulin acts as a "key". Its chemical message tells the cells to absorb glucose: insulin allows the sugar to enter into the cells in order to provide energy or to be stored in the liver.
