Sam Furukawa, former president of Japan Microsoft Corporation, believes that the future of interactive digital media will be shaped by artists and depend on collaboration. Each year from 1998 to 2005, Sam Furukawa took a group of talented artists to the SIGGRAPH conference, a huge computer graphics and interactive media exhibition in the US. Furukawa, who was then high in the ranks at Microsoft, would also take the group around art shows, the best restaurants, and amusement parks in a rented minivan. "I'm giving them a chance for inspiration," he explains. His role, as he sees it, was to give these artists a chance to "touch on the field, the newest trends and see the top-notch artists".
