The future has arrived. Rather, the information age, which many regard as the future, already pervades today's world completely, observes Richard Satava. Instead, the future belongs to the era of biointelligence, foresees the professor of surgery, University of Washington Medical Center. Biointelligence will represent the intersection of physical, biological, and information sciences (Figure 1), encompassing such cross- and multidisciplinary fields as robotics, biosensors, materials, genomics, and bioinformatics. Satava has exposure to the latest technological advances in medicine, having served as a professor of surgery in the Army Medical Corps, a programme manager of Advanced Biomedical Technology at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and currently a senior science advisor to the US Army Medical Research and Material Command. Some of these seem to come from science fiction: an intelligent robotic nurse designed to replace its human counterpart in the operating room, remote virtual and telesurgery, non-invasive therapy, high-intensity focused ultrasound that vaporises or coagulates tissue, and more.
