Respiratory problems, including infections of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, are a very common reason for patients to attend their GPs. Eight million people suffer from respiratory disease in the UK, with one-third of the population visiting their general practice at least once a year with a respiratory condition. Cough is the most common reason for patients to visit their GP.
