Elbow pain is a common complaint that affects a significant proportion of the population and accounts for a high number of consultations within general practice. The cause of elbow pain in some patients may be obvious and localized such as in the case of olecranon bursitis, but in others, this may be presentation of an occult multisystem disorder. We have tried to provide both a comprehensive review of the possible causes of elbow pain as well as useful methods of history taking and examination to help differentiate between causes. Most causes of elbow pain may be effectively treated in General Practice and we have included an update on the practical techniques for injections around the joint.
