Ned Lerner is in it, but his goal with collaboration tools is to keep IT out of the way. In leading development of Sony Computer Entertainment's Sharing Information Portal, he used mostly open source applications. "If you have to bring in the IT expert every time you try to make a change, you tend not to make any," says Lerner, director of tools and technology, who will speak at this week's Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston. "So a lot of these [applications] are basically self-service." Sony developers use wikis based on the open source Atlassian Confluence for collaborative game design. Games are multimillion-dollar projects involving hundreds of people, and Lerner trusts the documentation to wikis. How far will Lerner push the open source Web 2.0 approach? Lately he's touting Skype and Webcams as an alternative to high-end videoconferencing, where "the hassle factor is just too much."
