Developments with WorldCat, Legislation, Search Engines, and More

By the time you read this in September, OCLC will have launched its new WorldCat.org site. In mid-July when I covered the de- velopment in a NewsBreak, OCLC quietly posted information about this site but had not made any announcements. The WorldCat.org site continues OCLC's efforts with its Open WorldCat program to make library resources more visible to Web users and to increase awareness of libraries as a primary source of reliable information. The WorldCat.org search box makes all 70-plus million records vis- ible in the WorldCat database, not just the smaller data subsets of 3.4 million to 4.4 million available by the Open World-Cat partner sites, such as Google, Yahoo! and others.
