摘要

Down through history, one of the somewhat embarrassing truths about human conduct is the shockingly weD-documented (though rarely discussed) fact that human beings often derive the motivation for their conduct—both good and bad—from vanity, not virtue. I was arguing this point with a colleague the other day and incident after incident, precedent after precedent just leapt to mind. Take the civil rights movement of the 1960s, for instance. A truthful chronicle of that critical breakthrough in our nation's history would have to include a chapter devoted to the so-called Rat Pack—those trend-setting, cooler-than-cool showstop-pers. Frank Sinatra as chairman of the board, Dean (aka Dino) Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., et al., set a style that many found offensive and even dangerous.
