The Authors Guild, the Association of American Publishers, and a group of authors and publishers settled their class action lawsuit against Google Book Search in late October after filing the suit on Sept. 20, 2005, and negotiating terms for the past 3 years. The settlement agreement is still pending final approval by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. When approved, Google Book Search will provide more access to out-of-print books, offer more ways to purchase copyrighted books, feature institutional subscriptions to books online, enable free access from U.S. libraries, and distribute compensation to authors and publishers along with providing more control over access to their works. The agreement says that Google will also make payments totaling $125 million to establish the Book Rights Registry to resolve existing claims by authors and publishers and cover legal fees.
