The End of Free Internet

The New York Times reported last week that the Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 to open for public debate regarding new rules meant to guarantee a free and open Internet. The recent net neutrality debate is a result of the FCC proposal permitting Internet service providers to set up "fast lanes" for Web sites to pay for quicker access to content. For example, Netflix, who accounts for roughly 30 percent of all web traffic, recently signed major deals with internet service providers Verizon and Comcast to ensure its videos are streamed to customers more smoothly. Many other large companies have also brokered deals for faster service.
