The demand for portable communications has been a major driver of the electronics industry for some time, bringing us cellular telephones, PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, and ever-smaller notebook PCs, to name only a few. These devices have become all but ubiquitous in an unprecedent-edly short period of time. Even video, with its massive bandwidth and processing requirements, has made its appearance in PCs on wireless networks and in multimedia cellular-telephone services. However, television, the main source of moving images in our daily experience, has remained outside the reach of handheld devices. Despite the availability of over-the-air TV transmissions almost everywhere, consumers have not been able to receive these broadcasts using handheld devices because the technology has not been sufficiently advanced. Today, that situation is changing.
