Display designers have multiple options to develop LCDs that are readable in very-bright-ambient lighting conditions. Here, the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to solving this critical issue are examined. A small but growing offshoot of the rapid rise of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) is the aftermarket LCD-enhancement business. For those working in this area, the primary challenge is to enable LCDs to be more readable under high-ambient lighting conditions, including direct sunlight. Although advances have been made over the past 15 years, there is still plenty of room for improvement, and there are several approaches that address this critical issue. In this article, some of the methods will be detailed, providing designers a primer on how best to address the issue of LCDs in high-ambient lighting conditions.
