Performing digital activism: new aesthetics and discourses of resistance

In Performing Digital Activism: New Aesthetics and Discourses of Resistance, Fidele A. Vlavo historically and culturally contextualizes digital activism dating back to the 1990s. Focusing on digital activism as 'social and political action exclusive to the Internet' (p. 6), Vlavo examines the discourse and practices of several digital activist groups, including the Zapatistas, Critical Arts Ensemble (CAE), Electronic Disturbance Theater, the electrohippies, and Anonymous. Vlavo focuses on these groups in terms of how they conceptualize and enact protest in digital space. Borrowing from Patrice Flichy's work, Vlavo uses the term cyber-imaginaires to group the narrative themes of these texts and performative protests throughout the book. She critically examines the problematic aspects of these cyber-imaginaires and contextualizes them within larger historical and cultural structures. Through this process, Vlavo creates a new framework for further research in digital activism.
