What is troubling the world's mature democracies? The changes in modern democratic societies, its causes and consequences have preoccupied a world of political scientists for close to 40 years. The discussion that started off with gloomy crisis theories in the late 1960s has, in the light of the democratic survival and expansion rate, developed into a debate about the challenges that mature democracies are facing.
