The contemporary geo-political moment offers a unique opportunity for scholars of media and communication. Whereas debates over technological determinism have historically been cooped up in classrooms and academic journals, today the mainstream press is deeply engaged with the issue. In addition to cover stories on the impact of social networking, countless high-circulation periodicals have devoted space to asking whether the Arab Spring of 2011 should be called the 'Twitter Revolution', implying that the technologies, not the revolutionaries, deserves top billing. It is a profound question and one that should prompt scholars to look for new intellectual tools with which to craft answers.
