In and out of the nest: exploring attachment and separation in an infant observation

In this paper, I present the observation of a baby boy from birth to 18 months, as a way of thinking about the links between attachment and separation, particularly as reflected in play. By focusing on the dichotomy of close physical intimacy, through holding and breastfeeding, and independent play, I suggest that this baby's way of playing in his family raised the question of whether or not play may be shared or is something more independent. This reflects a dilemma about whether a baby can be both intimately linked to his mother and at the same time be an individual. I also think about the role of the observer in gazing at the baby and receiving his gaze, as a way of thinking about the development of triangular space.
