Economic forecasters, market analysts and industrial gurus have been debating the pace—and some even the existence—of U.S. manufacturing growth, particularly amid recent reports of sluggish manufacturing employment. But if the pundits really want to know what's happening, or about to happen, with U.S. manufacturers, maybe they should get it straight from the horse's mouth: Manufacturers across the country say that growth is underway, and expectations for the future are positive. The INDUSTRY WEEK/Manufacturing Performance Institute 2004 Census of Manufacturers, a survey of 681 manufacturing plants conducted in April and May of this year, reveals sound manufacturing growth based on factors such as revenue and em-ployment projections and current and recent production output.
