The benefits of allowing for increased starting current in AC squirrel cage induction motors

Opportunities for obtaining improved motor efficiency by reducing the present restrictions on the motor starting current are identified. The existing National Electrical Manufacturer's Association (NEMA) standards are reviewed, and recommendations are given for a new standard. The impact on motor operating temperature and power factor is discussed. In cases where increased starting current is prohibitive, alternative starting methods are given.
