There are three stakes in railway maintenance in France: 1. permanently guarantee a very high level of safety and quality for travelers and freight; 2. improve the availability of equipment in everyday operations; 3. pursue the endless quest for productivity, given the rail industry's intrinsically high fixed production costs. To foresee breakdowns and develop preventive maintenance, the initial strategic response has been to deploy digital technology (sensors on trains) and make a "smart" analysis of the data thus provided. The diversity of its industrial infrastructure and know-how have made Maintenance & Engineering at the SNCF (the French national railway company) an international reference mark. Nowadays, the agility and accessibility of the technology for an "industry of the future" provide this department with strategic leverage for accelerating the overhaul of installations, some of which are more than a hundred years old.%Les enjeux de la maintenance ferroviaire en France peuvent se résumer en trois points : 1. Garantir en permanence un très haut niveau de sécurité et de qualité des opérations pour les voyageurs et l'activité Fret. 2. Assurer la meilleure disponibilité du matériel en exploitation commerciale. 3. Rechercher en permanence la productivité, particulièrement dans le cadre d'une industrie soumise à des coûts de production fixes intrinsèquement élevés. Les technologies de l'internet industriel, avec le déploiement de capteurs sur les trains et l'analyse intelligente de leurs données, apportent une première réponse, stratégique, celle de l'anticipation des pannes pour accentuer la maintenance préventive. La diversité de ses infrastructures industrielles, de ses savoir-faire font de la Maintenance et de l'Ingénierie SNCF une référence internationale. Aujourd'hui, l'agilité et l'accessibilité des technologies de l'industrie du futur lui apportent un nouveau levier stratégique pour accélérer la transformation d'installations industrielles parfois centenaires.
