The planned expansion to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in The Netherlands will have a knock-on effect on the airport's fire service, including new facilities, new infrastructure and increased training requirements. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is now the third largest in Europe. Only Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Heathrow in London are bigger. To cope with growing passenger numbers - up 9.2% to 63.6 million in 2016 - the airport is investing over 350 million euros (US$420 million) in a new pier and terminal building. The size of overflow Airport Lelystad will also be increased from 2019. The new pier will be completed in 2019 and the new terminal will be operational in 2023.
