Harnessing huge potentials of seri-waste

The country is forging ahead consistently in the production of quality silk, over the decades under the developmental plans, thanks to our R&D efforts to increase the productivity and achieve international grade and the initiatives to take them to the land. The achievements are noteworthy and indeed appealing. But, what is appalling on the other hand, is the approach of our sericulture industry to work in single production mode with silk for textiles, by and large; as we cannot afford to remain oblivious to the large amounts of waste generated in the entire value chain process right from farm waste to rearing, reeling and weaving wastes, that have huge potentials for utilization. Initiatives taken by various countries, sericulturally developed and otherwise, for much advanced and innovative utilization of the components of cocoon namely, sericin, fibroin and the pupa, with objectives of much higher order and, of course, returns to a farmer towards holistic development of the industry, need not be simply gazed with all amaze.
