North Central Railway was carved out of erstwhile Northern, North Eastern, Western and Central Railway on 1 April, 2003. However the roots of North Central Railway as indeed of Indian Railways, are old and form part myriad legacies that is India. The section from Allahabad to Kanpur which is the part of present day Allahabad division of North Central railway was the first section to be opened in the whole of North India on 3rd March 1859. This section was later extended upto Delhi in due course.
