The emergence of East Indian Railway with its first train service plying between Howrah and Hooghly, a distance of 24 miles, on 15 August, 1854 is an unforgettable landmark in the history of rail transportation in Eastern India. Rechristened as Eastern Railway in post Independent India, this railway has never looked back. Eastern Railway, after several reorganization, now occupies the place of pride as a prime mover of men & materials in the Eastern Region of the country and is playing a pivotal role in the socio-economic growth of Eastern India. At the same time, Eastern Railway is the gateway for logistics to North-Eastern region. Now, after reorganisation, Eastern Railway (ER) has four divisions namely, Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol and Malda along with three major workshops at Liluah, Kanchrapara and Jamalpur.
