Holistic Approach for the Management of Total Dissolved Solids in Tannery Effluent

摘要

The conventional wastewater treatment methods employed in industrial effluent treatment plants (ETP) are effective in reducing organic load but not total dissolved solids (TDS) load. However, regulatory authorities require industries to reduce TDS below 2100 mg/L for which there is no best practicable available technology in the country. Tanneries have the same problem of not meeting TDS standards of regulatory authorities. In order to meet TDS level, various proactive and reactive approaches are made. Ambur is an industrial town, located near Vellore, consists of leather tanning industries has attempted to address this issue in an holistic way by blending with domestic sewage. From the different options, it is found that dilution with domestic sewage from the town is the best practical and possible solution in Ambur town.
