A case study of shrinkage and other cracks in pavement quality concrete

Although various types of cracks that occur in concrete pavements during the construction and immediately after construction cannot be eliminated, it is possible to minimize them by taking precautions during design and construction. By providing proper joint spacing, specifying low heat of hydration cements or pozzolonic ingredients such as flyash and using high performance concrete in the design, crack formation can be reduced.
