Step Aside Analog, Digital Copiers Invade

It wasn't long ago that analog copiers were the device of choice for an in-plant to create its company's newsletters, in-house communications and a variety of other black-and-white print jobs. But, digital technology is steam-rolling its way into all segments of the graphic arts industry, and the in-plant's copy center is no exception. Vendors have used digital technology to make copiers print and printers copy. Among the many reasons for this emerging technology's success is that digital copiers have fewer moving parts than traditional analog copiers, which require complicated optical scanning systems. As a result, digital copiers are less likely to jam and are more reliable. A copier that can scan once and print many limits wear and tear on the machine and on the originals, too. These digital devices also are quieter than their analog counterparts. Perhaps most important, though, is digital copiers can produce better output quality because every page is an original. This is a key feature, especially when producing complicated graphics or photos. And, several sets of copies can be made at one time, so the operator can move on to another task as soon as the job begins.
