摘要

This new approach to providing signal information to blind pedestrians promises to be effective and quiet when installed correctly and will also remedy a long standing lack of standardization in the location of pedestrian pushbuttons. As usual the technician is on the front line, and the understanding of installation issues will determine the success or failure of every installation. This paper highlights some of the most common and dangerous mistakes noted in APS evaluations. Others, including backwards or incorrect Braille labels, special requirements when two APS are mounted on the same pole, devices with other types of speech message problems such as the wrong street name, wrong messages, and APS pushbuttons mounted in grass or bushes have also been noted. In addition, it has been noted that in some cases, design drawings and specifications were accurate, but contractors did not install the APS as specified. A future article will address these other issues.
