What Courses Should Entry-Level Biomeds Take?

Are psychology and calculus necessary parts of a biomedical equipment technician (BMET) education program? It depends. To some programs they are-to others they aren't. "Clearly different schools have different attitudes and experience with what they think is expected of their graduates," says Robert Stiefel, president of RHS Biomedical Engineering Consulting LLC in Baltimore, MD. Stiefel should know. He's helping to lead a project by AAMI to develop a recommended core curriculum for biomed education programs across the country. The project, which began in early 2011, is expected to be completed later this year or early 2013. As part of the project, Stiefel interviewed BMET employers and educators. They reinforced the inconsistencies among the offered courses and the importance of developing a core curriculum.
