On-demand routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (IVIANETs) use route-cache extensively to take routing decisions in order to reduce routing overhead and route discovery latency. The bottleneck of their performance is the latency associated with the absence of a mechanism for the timely removal of stale routes from cache. In this paper, a route caching strategy called Hop count based Adaptive Route cache Timeout (HART) is proposed to alleviate the route staleness in on-demand routing protocols. In this work, the HART mechanism is applied to Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol and the resultant one is referred to as HART DSR. The performance of HART DSR in terms of routing overhead, packet delivery ratio and packet latency are investigated and compared with those of basic DSR. The HART DSR is found to exhibit a better performance than the basic DSR. Though, this paper is concentrating oniy on DSR, the HART mechanism can be applied to any on-demand routing protocol.
