A Performance Evaluation of Energy Efficient Schemes for Green Office Networks

Power consumption in office networks has become one of issues due to its running cost. In order to reduce the power consumption, several approaches have been proposed such as Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) [7] and En­ergy Efficient Wireless aggregation (EEW) [8]. In this research, we develop an analytical model and apply the model to evaluate and compare performance of the existing technologies. Our interested parameters are the number and the average throughput of clients. Our analysis results show that, for networks with low average throughput and small number of clients, EEW is more efficient than EEE but vice versa for networks with high average throughput and large number of clients. We also introduce EEEW, a combinations of EEW, EEE and EEEWS, a combination of EEW, EEE and link-sleep techniques. We found that, when the average throughput of clients is less than O.bMbps the combinations can save more than 66% of the power consumed by EEE.
