Node-density-based resource replication for mobile ad hoc networks

Resource replication can improve data accessibility in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Traditional resource replication schemes usually focus on the data allocation among nodes but the transmission costs for replication, such as wireless bandwidth and battery energy consumption, are not considered sufficiently, hi MANETs, communication among nodes is realized by means of wireless broadcast. In this paper, we aim to reduce the replication cost by utilizing the wireless broadcast. We propose the density-based replication, in which each node broadcasts its resources only when the node density around it is high. This method enables each node to replicate the resources to many nodes by one wireless transmission. To realize the density-based replication, we propose a distributed approach that enables nodes to locally judge whether the node density around them is high or not. We show by simulations that the density-based replication can greatly decrease the number of wireless transmissions used to replicate resources to a given fraction of nodes compared with simple approach which do not consider the node density. Also, our protocol can control replication density which suits a predefined fraction using local estimation of the number of nodes in the system and the number of replications.
