Monte-Carlo simulation of a novel2 m-long entire-body PET scanner

Current clinical PET scanners have about 20 cm axial field-of-view (FOV). These scanners image the whole body using about six or seven bed positions with overlapping. On the other hand, the entire whole-body PET scanner with an extended axial FOV, which can trace whole-body uptake images at the same time ana improve sensitivity dynamically, has been desired. In static imaging, the entire whole-body PET scanner is also useful for reducing scan time. In this paper, we evaluated sensitivity of a PET scanner with 2-m axial FOV using Monte-Carlo simulation. The simulated PET scanner with LSO detectors had a ring diameter of 80 cm. We showed that a sensitivity gain of 68 was achieved in comparison to the current PET scanner.
