A laser model based on rate equations for the simulation ofnhigh-speed optical access networks using directly modulated lasers isnpresented. The laser model is implemented into a commercial microwavensimulator (Microwave Design System (MDS), Hewlett Packard). Thenextraction of DC- and small-signal RF parameters of the laser isndescribed. The laser model is verified by the very good agreement ofnsimulated and measured large-signal intensity and chirp waveforms. Modelnvalidity is further confirmed by comparing measured and simulatedn10-Gbit/s eye diagrams after up to 100 km of standard fiber
