The propagation of partially incoherent light in nonlinear medianis analyzed using the Wigner transform method. The power and versatilitynof this approach is illustrated by several examples which clearlyndemonstrate how partial incoherence tends to suppress coherentninstabilities by weakening the nonlinearity. In particular, it is foundnthat the effect of partial incoherence on modulational instabilities cannbe described in terms of a Landau-like damping effect, which counteractsnthe coherent growth rate of the instability. Similarly, in the case ofnthe self-focusing collapse instability, the nonlinear focusing effectnbecomes successively smaller as the coherence length of the lightndecreases and eventually no collapse phenomenon occurs
