摘要

Technological breakthrough has caused a sea change not only in the outlook of the library users but also in the methods of exchanging information, storage, retrieval, dissemination etc. Like any other organization providing services, one of the focal areas of Library and Information Service (LIS) has been to satisfy the users. In the library hierarchy there are a good number of personnel working at lower levels namely library assistant, library technician, library attendant etc. who require a wide range of competencies to carry out their day-to-day work, assist the senior officers help to achieve the organizational objectives. In the changing scenario the need for such competencies has become more demanding than ever before. Comprehensive training modules for lower level professionals in libraries may be developed on the basis of elements of competencies derived from various LIS activities. An attempt has been made in this paper to identify elements of competencies from various units of competencies that constitute various broad based LIS activities required by junior level library staff and assistants.
