Using a Simple Database To Capture Retiring Employees' Knowledge

At South Feather Water and Power, we recently faced a problem that seems to be increasingly common in the hydroelectric industry. One of our most experienced employees, Jim Higgins, was nearing retirement, and we needed a way to transfer his vast stores of knowledge and experience to his successors. We decided to develop a maintenance work management system―a database to collect information about maintenance work practices―in order to document Higgins' knowledge. However, we had no such system, nor did we have a budget for one. But with the help of a user-friendly guide, we fortunately found a relatively quick and inexpensive alternative solution using software already installed in our computers.
