Destroying Snake River Dams: 'Lose-Lose' Logic

Several years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took a look at whether four of its dams on the Snake River in eastern Washington should be breached to assist salmon passage. The Corps concluded dam breaching was a bad idea. It remains a bad idea today. Destroying the four dams and hydroelectric facilities in the name of fish recovery is a lose-lose proposition. The Pacific Northwest region would lose because dam removal will not recover fish runs. Its citizens would lose by suffering devastating economic effects. Industries that utilize the vital benefits of the remarkable Snake River system have an immense incentive to see real recovery of fish runs. We take offense to misleading statements that are not supported by science, economics, or experience. They brush aside real threats to our Northwest economy while glossing over uncertain benefits to fish. Dam removal advocates would nave you think it is easy to rebuild fish runs - take out a few dams and ... voila!
