Hydro plant owners who focus only on electricity production may miss valuable opportunities to provide ancillary services — such as regulation and spinning reserves. By altering the way a project operates, the owner may significantly increase revenues. One case study shows a utility could increase its hydro revenues by more than a third by operating to provide a combination of standard electricity production and ancillary services.
