Hydropower in Norway

Norway's mountainous terrain and position on the North Sea lend themselves ideally to hydroelectric production — 99.2 percent of the electricity produced in the country comes from hydropower. Norway has an area of about 324,000 square kilometers. The country's geographic location puts it in the path of moving polar low-pressure systems, which bring moist air and abundant precipitation. More than 70 percent of the country is covered with high mountains, which contain many lakes and rivers that flow to the North Sea.
