Hydropower: A Benefit Every Nation Deserves

A few years ago, my office in Washington, D.C., United States, was across from the World Bank headquarters. As I strolled past the bank one day, I saw that the walls were plastered with signs proclaiming "Stop Narmada Dam" and "No to Sardar Sarovar." There also were demonstrators, so I asked what "Narmada" and "Sardar Sarovar" meant. I was told they were the names of a conspiracy to destroy the environment of India. Having lived in Pakistan, in Lahore near the Indian border, I knew the environment of India was not in especially grand condition. My reaction was that zero-emission, zero-fossil-fuel electricity might be pretty good for the environment of India.
