摘要

Despite the fact that its scope only includes the mid-1870s through 1933, this book is destined to become a landmark in human resource management (HRM) for several reasons, not the least of which is the 57 pages worth of amazingly detailed and precise examples, quotations, and citations that support Kaufman's arguments. As he notes in the preface, "The more I researched and wrote on the history and concept of HRM, the more I discovered still remained to be done on the subject. In particular, and to my initial surprise, I found that extant treatments had missed or omitted important parts of the story, that the conventional wisdom among HRM and industrial relations (IR) scholars about the origins of the HRM field is in places skewed and misinterpreted, and that a wealth of primary and secondary sources on the early history of HRM had yet to be tapped" (pp. ix, x).
