Leadership and Power in International Development: Navigating the Intersections of Gender, Culture, Context, and Sustainability edited by Randal J. Thompson and Julia Storberg-Walker aims to build awareness about how leaders in international development work approach the act of leading. The editors have compiled a fine collection of stories penned by 18 leaders from Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, describing challenges, successes and failures in leading change in different countries, sectors and levels. Most impressively, the editors have consciously leveraged the combination of their practitioner-scholar skills to proffer a tentative new theory of leading in this context. This dual emphasis on scholarship and practice of leading in international development is apparent in the manner the editors have envisioned the book's content. While each chapter presenting a riveting story from the lives of the leaders gives a firsthand glimpse into the practice of leading in international development work, the chapter on the Theory of Leading in International Development offers the flavor of scholarship through theorizing the process of leading in this context in reference to the commonalities, differences and critical leadership issues evident in the stories.
