The prohibition against registration of descriptive words extends to words that are clearly descriptive or deceptively misdescriptive of the place of origin of the wares or services,rnThe mere fact that words may also be geographical names does not preclude registration. The intent of the prohibition is to prevent any one person from acquiring a monopoly on a word that is generally recognized as a locality connected with the wares or services in question, which prohibition extends to thinly disguised variants of such geographical words, or ancient or historical names for such geographical areas.
