The U.S. District Court for Connecticut has approved a motion for class certification in a suit alleging that the Housing Authority of the City of Bridgeport (BHA) discriminates against non-elderly disabled applicants for public housing by excluding them from housing reserved for tenants 62 and over. (Matyasovszky v. Housing Authority of the City of Bridgeport, No. CIVA.3:03CV968(WIG), 2005 WL 41385 (D.Conn.), January 7, 2005). The plaintiffs contended that the BHA's policies have resulted in disabled applicants being excluded from BHA housing for unnecessarily long periods and cited statistical evidence to support their allegations. They specifically objected to their exclusion from the Fireside Apartments, an elderly-only project.
