With the help of a $35 million tax-exempt bond issue, the Strategic Housing Finance Corp. (SHFC) is offering a lease-purchase homeownership program to low- and moderate-income families, giving them time to establish a solid lease history and to establish a minimum credit score that would allow them to become homeowners. The SHFC is a subsidiary established by the Housing Authority of Travis County, Texas, where Austin is located, and the program is available to any eligible family up to 120 percent of area median income. The maximum first mortgage amount for the program is $359,650. The size of the bond issue was determined after the underwriter, George K. Baum & Company, researched potential demand in this market.
