Kentucky Highlands Seeks HUD Funds for Affordable Housing

Kentucky Highlands Investment Corp. (KHIC) has requested a $300,000 grant from HUD's Office of Rural Housing and Economic Development (RHED) to build 20 single-family affordable for-sale housing units in six economically distressed counties in southeastern Kentucky, according to Stephen Taylor, KHIC development director. KHIC would provide $151,000 in matching funds. KHIC established a new nonprofit housing development corporation, Southern Tier Housing Corp., to oversee the three-year project to construct and finance 20 new, energy-efficient homes; identify and train 75 individuals to be homeowners; place at least 20 qualifying households in new two-bath homes; and train 80 college students and troubled youth in construction trades, Taylor said.
